Lawn Darts - History of the Game
Research has indicated that Lawn Darts were first introduced around the end of the 1950's. Popular with the privileged few who could afford pastime luxuries with the added bonus of having a lawn in their back garden. These people were certainly few and far between. So much so, that by mid 1960's, the supply for these darts was cut off by lack of demand.
Perhaps it was down to the fact that the general public didn't have much leisure time. Perhaps only minorities had lawns. Certainly the majority of people around this period had very little disposable income and if they had a garden, it was usually in the form of an allotment or vegetable patch.
The reason that Lawn Darts never became fully established was almost certainly not because it wasn't any fun. I remember the 1980's and playing lawn darts with my brother in our small yard and we loved that game more than any other lawn game we had.
Today in a world with so much more leisure time, facilities and sociable culture, Lawn darts are becoming quickly established as a great way to relax and have fun.
